In the field of softball, innings play a great role. It refers to the whole structure of the game. Normally, the game is played in seven innings. But it could be less or more depending on the type of league or the level of play. The purpose of each innings is to gather possible runs to win the game.

  1. Pitching

Each player in this game serves a definite role and responsibility. Among them, the pitcher is the crucial player in the defensive team. The role of the pitcher is to throw the ball underhand while remaining in its circle.

To ensure accuracy and fairness, remaining within the circle is mandatory for the pitcher.

  1. Baserunning

In softball, baserunning plays a pivotal part. The order in which runners must move from one base to the next is counterclockwise. They begin at home plate and go to first base, second base, third base, and back to home plate.

Runners must touch each base in the proper sequence in order to be deemed safe. A strategic component is added to the game as the defensive team actively attempts to stop runners by tagging them with the ball or using other defensive tactics.

  1. Scoring

Scoring is the fundamental object to win softball. When securing a team, make sure you have the best runner and batter in your team. Their ability to bat and runners’ ability to take runs will be what makes your team the winner of the show.

When the defensive team throws a ball, the batter bats, and meanwhile the runner tries his best to accumulate a score. This is the ultimate way for the offensive team to score victory.

  1. Batting

Batters are nothing without pitchers. And vice versa. A batter’s job is to hit the ball coming from the pitcher. But to do so, a player had to lower the bat below his shoulder lever. Learn how to hold a baseball properly here

However, there are many ways a batter can be out of the game. The most common among all is by receiving three strikes which could be the result of a missing shot or swinging of the ball. Other times, if an umpire of the game calls a strike, a batter is bound to leave the ground.

The defensive team’s fielding members’ main target is to get the batter out of the field. This involves great teamwork and quick decision-making along with swift movement.

The work of a fielder is to catch the flying ball, throw it to the team member, and stay efficient throughout the entire game.

  1. Foul Balls

Foul balls have a heavy impact on the total game. When a batter strikes a ball outside its fair area it is considered as a foul ball. Foul balls are considered strikes. If a batter hits three fouls he will be out of the game.

Substitution is a necessary part of the game. It helps the game remain fresh. Team players can make substitutions at any moment of the game. Not only that, they can even re-enter the game if needed.
